¹³ For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is ^(A)Elijah who ^[a]was to come.

¹¹ And they asked Him, saying, “Why is it that the scribes say that ^(A)Elijah must come first?” ¹² And He said to them, “Elijah does come first and he restores all things. And yet how is it written of ^(B)the Son of Man that ^(C)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? ¹³ But I say to you that Elijah has ^[a]indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written of him.”

¹⁷ And it is he who will ^(A)go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of ^(B)Elijah, ^(C)to turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, to ^(D)make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

²⁷ This is the one about whom it is written:

²⁸ I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is ^[b]least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
